Hey there!

Yeah, you!

Come on, lean in a little closer, I have something to tell you…guess what?

It’s my birthday!

Here’s where I’m totally honest with you and tell you that it absolutely does NOT feel like my birthday. Not even a little bit. In fact, it feels like the totally wrong time of year for it to be my birthday. I’m sure the time zone differences, weather differences, the fact that who keeps track of what day it is on vacation (to me it still feels like the middle of May), and that I was awake for over thirty hours just miiight have something to do with that.

But when you wake up to a text from your mom at 6:09AM that says “HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Love you! You were five minutes old 27 years ago!” I don’t care who you are, or how screwed up your body clock is, that would make anyone smile and get into the birthday mood.

And when a good friend has her baby girl at 6:26PM on June 4th, just about 12 hours before the time you were born, it would bring some perspective. As you see your friends become parents, you’d stop and think about how much joy comes with “birth”days. How much significance your birthday has for not only you, but for your parents. The fact that your parents may celebrate your birthday just as much, if not even more than you.

Because your birthday brought them you.

Just like the New Year, birthdays bring a time of reflection. What did you accomplish this year? What do you hope to do next year? Where will you be next year at this time, how will life be different or the same?

Those questions rolled around in my head today as Paul and I planted pumpkins today (farm work never ends – not even for birthdays). Walking back and forth in the field behind the tractor, making sure the seeds were coming out of the hopper and being buried properly – it had a rhythm to it. I started thinking about how I’d changed over the past year, how I’ve improved in my photography, the adventures Paul and I have been fortunate enough to go on. But instead of making mental markers for my improvement, or what I was proud of, what I’d work on, I found myself just plain old thankful.

Thankful for my health.
Thankful for my marriage.
Thankful for Paul.
Thankful for both my family and Paul’s family.
Thankful for the incredible friendships I’ve cultivated this past year.
Thankful for all of the great memories I have of both Bandit and Burke.
Thankful for all of the sweet critters I get to call mine.
Thankful for my vehicle, my house.
Thankful for the food I eat, the clothes I wear.
Thankful for my access to education.
Thankful for time.
Thankful for my purpose, even if I don’t know exactly what that is yet.
Thankful for my faith, and ultimately thankful for my Lord and Savior.

You guys, I get to live my life out with joy and anticipation everyday. I get to live the life where I look forward to tomorrow, and what it brings. I get to enjoy and explore this amazing world God created for our delight. That has “Something to be Thankful for” written all over it.

So I thought, why not document it? Especially since I’m trying to do more self portraits, I wondered what would happen in I made this a yearly project. A visual picture of how things change. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. So, here we go, I’m jumping in!

A start of an annual tradition.

As if cuddling animals all day wasn’t a great enough birthday gift, my freshly bloomed peonies are!

I was on set with Shelley and Nutrena today in two capacities. I was mainly a model for the morning session, and Shelley’s assistant in the evening. This morning we were at Luce Line Orchards which is GORGEOUS. Chickens, cows, goats, dogs, beautiful barns, and dreamy landscapes. So fun!

Then this evening the highlight of the shoot was this adorable lamb:

And the best part is that during our break this afternoon, Paul and I were able to take a pontoon ride together on the lake.

And top that all off with my peonies and the gorgeous weather.

It was a birthday for the books.

Happy Birthday to my favorite person! My steadfast champion of all things: Paul!

Its always been our birthday tradition to search out the places that offer free things to do (or eat!) on our birthdays. More and more places require that you sign up for a rewards program ahead of time, but good ole Denny’s offers a free Grand Slam, no strings attached. It’s always our starting point – breakfast at Denny’s – then we take on the day. Paul’s coffee mug reflected that optimism.
